How do I sign in to access my account?

  1. On the write.pegwritingscholar.com home page, enter your User Name and Password.
  2. Click Sign In. Sign In
    Note: The warning Sign In Unsuccessful will appear if the User Name and/or Password you enter is not valid. See How do I recover my password? below for help.
  3. If you are registered for more than one course, the Select a Course page will appear. Click the course name to access the course home page.

How do I recover my password?

  1. Click Forgot your password? on the PEG Writing Scholar home page.
  2. Enter your email address.
  3. Click Submit. Forgot password form
  4. Check your email inbox for a message from PEG Writing Scholar. This message will contain a new password you can use to access your account.

How do I enroll in a course I was assigned to take?

  1. Sign in using your User Name and Password.
  2. On the Select a Course page, enter the Course Code and click Register. You will be directed to the course home page.

How do I access the course home page?

Each course for which you are registered will have its own home page. You can access practice essays, lessons, and your records of essay performances and improvement all from the course home page.

How do I enroll in a different course from the course home page?

  1. From the course home page, click Change Course at the bottom of the screen.

How do I write a practice essay?

  1. Sign in using your User Name and Password.
  2. If you are registered for more than one course, the Select a Course page will appear. Click a course. Course list
  3. The home page will appear. Click the Practice tab. Write tab
  4. Select a writing prompt from the Prompt list.
  5. Read the prompt. If you want to fill in a prewriting graphical organizer, click Prewriting. If you want to immediately start writing your response to the prompt, click Begin Writing and skip to step 8. Begin writing button
  6. The Select an Organizer page will appear. Click on the desired organizer and then click the Next button. Next button
  7. The Prepare page will appear. Plan your response by filling in the organizer. The organizer will be available for reference on the Write an Essay page. Click Next to continue. Next button
  8. The Write an Essay page will appear. Read the prompt and begin entering a response in the large scrollable field provided.
    Note: Some courses have a limited amount of time to submit a response. Watch the clock to monitor the time remaining. Responses will be submitted automatically for scoring after time has expired.

How do I interpret my scores?

After you submit your practice essay for scoring, you will be directed to the Score Report page. This page contains a copy of your response, the scoring for your response, and a list of suggestions you can consider to improve your writing.

Skill Categories

Each essay response receives a score in each of 8 skill categories:

  • Development of Ideas
  • Organization
  • Style
  • Word Choice
  • Sentence Structure
  • Conventions
  • Textual Evidence
  • Content Accuracy

Scores in each category range from 1 (Inadequate) to 5 (Strong). The essay's total score is the sum of the 8 component scores.

Interpreting Scores

 

You can always work to improve your writing no matter what the score. However, categories that receive a score of 3 or lower should be targeted for special attention. Read the suggestions listed below the Scores section of the page as prompts to think about how to improve. There will be a list of suggestions for each category.

How do I access scores from the course home page?

  1. Sign in using your User Name and Password.
  2. If you are registered for more than one course, the Select a Course page will appear. Click a course. Course list
  3. The course home page will appear. All practice essays that the student has written will be listed. Click the date of the essay that you want to view. Essay list

How do I use lessons?

  1. Sign in using your User Name and Password.
  2. If you are registered for more than one course, the Select a Course page will appear. Click a course. Course list

    Note: There are three levels of lessons: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.

How do I send my instructor a message about an essay?

Students and instructors can post messages to each other on the Score Report page for an essay. Both can access the Score Report page after signing in to review and post messages at any time.

  1. Sign in using your User Name and Password.
  2. If you are registered for more than one course, the Select a Course page will appear. Click a course. Course list
  3. The course home page will appear. Click the date of the essay that you want to view. Essay list
    Note: If there are new messages, a link will appear in the Messages column. Click links in the Messages column to jump to new messages in the score report.
  4. The Score Report page will appear. Scroll down to the Messages section to read and post messages. To post a new message, enter a message in the scrollable field and click Post Message. Write message

How do I access my portfolio?

The portfolio contains the record of all practice essays a student has completed, monthly score averages, and a progress graph to show how scores have changed over time. Students can access their portfolios from the home page after registering for a course.

  1. Sign in using your User Name and Password.

Portfolio Contents

The portfolio page contains four sections: UsagePerformanceProgress, and Prompts.

UsageThe usage report displays the total number of essays and draft submissions and the average number of drafts submitted per essay. The report also includes a peer review report for students to access peer review feedback and a lesson usage report.
PerformanceThe performance report displays the student's average holistic and trait writing score. It also displays the student's average Common Core Writing Standard score. Students can also access the Score Reports for each essay to review the suggestions for improvements, recommended lessons, instructor comments, peer review feedback, make revisions, and submit additional drafts to be scored.
ProgressThe progress report displays the student's average holistic and Common Core Standard scores. The report can be viewed across three years or for the current year by trait or standard.
PromptsThe prompt report displays the student's holistic and trait scores for each specific writing prompt. It also displays the essays and draft submissions for each prompt.
